External Academic Competitions & Activities

Due to my interest in the Math and Sciences, I've participated in numerous external competitions and activities, which have certainly benefitted me in one way or another.

Below are some of them:

A*STAR Research Exposure Programme (REP)

Having received the A*STAR Study Awards, I was given the opportunity to participate in the Research Exposure Programme from 10th to 12th June 2015. I had the chance to visit Fusionopolis, where I was introduced to many new technology A*STAR research centers had created to with the aim of improving our quality of life. I was also exposed to knowledge beyond the syllabus pertaining to genetic modification, and was even able to try out the process of genetic modification hands-on, which was a truly enriching experience.

Singapore Mathematical Modelling Forum & Challenge 2014 (SMMFC)

This activity was one of the most memorable and fulfilling I've attended as a Nanyang student. It is a 2 full-day and 2 half-day Forum and Challenge consisting of students (15-16 years of age) from many different schools in countries over the world such as Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia. We learnt about mathematical modeling, which essentially involves the application of mathematical knowledge to solve real life problems with the use of special graphic calculators and software. A key highlight was the learning trip to Universal Studios Singapore, where we are required complete several tasks by applying the math modeling skills we learnt. The tasks and challenges assigned to us were really challenging. Hence, they not only provided us with the opportunity to experience the mathematization process, but also instill a variety of skills such as critical and inventive thinking. Our group was also honoured to win the Best Group Award given to the overall best-performing group in each class (comprising 5-6 groups).

Cluster W6 Science Symposium 2014

My Science SIA team in 2013 was given the opportunity to present our project at the Cluster W6 Science Symposium, together with a few groups from other secondary schools. It was an eye-opening experience to get a glimpse into the work and findings of the other groups who presented. I was also inspired by the guest speaker for the symposium, who shared valuable insights to the development of nanotechnology in Singapore.
